Between expectations that need to be scaled down and striking architectural choices, the search for a home can prove to be a long and complicated issue. In Houses for Sale, architects Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample of MOS Architects transform this quest into an itinerary through a series of houses designed by great names in architecture and show us the peculiarities of each of them through drawings that are full of details.
Houses with a roof-garden and unconventional front doors, houses that look like letters of the alphabet, houses that remind us of other houses, houses that don’t seem to be made to live in, houses that float on the ground… After having visited so many of them, why not start building a new one? As the authors tell us, Houses for Sale is a children’s book, but not only that: “At first glance, children’s books seem like the simplest things in the world. Their pages often seem casually organized, with a nonchalant and playful attitude. But the reality is the opposite: there is an incredible sophistication to the naïveté of children’s books. Throughout its making, we treated this book as an architecture project; everything was considered and reconsidered, worked and reworked over and over again: the book itself became a metaphor for the architectural discipline and its constant search for architecture”.
Published together with CCA – Canadian Centre for Architecture, Houses for Sale is a hardback edition, printed in 5 colours, with a black fore-edge and a bright headband.
Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample founded MOS in New York in 2005. In 2017 they were awarded the National Design Award (Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum). Their architecture projects and research are world renowned and are part of many permanent collections.
