Landscape Observatory is the first book to curate the work and values of Terence Harkness, a master of the craft of landscape architecture. Contributors to this book offer overdue recognition of Harkness's impact on landscape architecture through his design practice as well as his long reach as an educator. Landscape observatory is lavishly illustrated with Harkness's original drawings and sensuous photography of built project in the context of the vernacular landscapes he knows and loves so well.

The foreword by Gary Hilderbrand positions Harkness in the pantheon of great teacher-designers in the field. The introduction provides a panoramic overview of Harkness's career; from graduate student to design savant, major themes and thresholds in his work are outlined. In the Portfolio & Essays section, essays by close collaborators illuminate five key projects that exemplify mature practice. The final section, Reflections, presents short retrospective about Harkness written with the clarity of hindsight. Throughout the book, Harkness's own words from interviews and writings are interwoven and share his deep passion for landscape design, planning and education.

Landscape Observatory is an instrument for seeing into environmental relationships as well as a plea for fostering greater landscape literacy.
