With five years behind us, this issue marks the beginning of a new era for paisea, which can be seen not just in a radical new look but also in a more flexible approach to content, which will give more scope to today’s trends in landscape architecture without losing the clarity of presentation that has characterised it since the first issue came out.

We are pursuing these objectives in the context of one of the most emblematic fields of urban planning, landscape architecture and public space in general: the street. Our aim in this issue is to show how the street has evolved since we first dealt with the subject in issue 4 of paisea. Its design and conception are, more than any other urban space, a reflection of new urban needs, new ways of living, and new sociological, economic and environmental challenges.

Mobility is clearly one of the most studied and talked about issues in this field today because its function is so important. Now more than ever, though, street design must take many different factors,
approaches and services into account if it is to achieve any degree of harmony. This issue features articles on these issues, and also on new solutions for the best ways of introducing vegetation into
streets in the article about structural soil.
