BIG or Bjarke Ingels Group is one of the best and most talented Danish architectural firms in recent years. Originally, Bjarke Ingels founded the architectural firm PLOT together with Julien de Smedt, and the duo created high-profile projects in a number of locations including Ørestad outside of Copenhagen.
The housing complex Bjerget (“Mountain Dwellings”) was developed by PLOT and completed by BIG, and the result was rightfully awarded the first prize in the Housing category at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona in 2008. But there are many new projects underway from BIG. In the book THE BIG LAB, Boris Brorman Jensen and Jens Thomas Arnfred comment on the firm’s latest proposals, first prizes in international competitions and projects under construction, including the unique “8 House” or BIG House with both residential and commercial units, which is currently being completed in Ørestad.
The book is lavishly illustrated with drawings and construction site photographs. The main emphasis of the book is on the studio lab where the ideas are developed, the models are constructed, and geometrically sophisticated drawings see the light of day.
