Pier Vittorio Aureli’s 30-drawing series The Marriage of Reason and Squalor is an exploration of noncompositional architecture.
Starting from a basic geometric shape, each drawing derives its further articulation from the initial form’s structure, following proportions, symmetries and internal relationships. Although starting from a clear decision, the inexorable logic of the process results in the erasure of the author. This paradoxical abandonment of composition generates drawings devoid of context, inhabitation and function, and devoid also of justification.
